Applying for a Student Visa

When your application has been successful and you receive a letter of offer, the next step is to apply for a student visa

Applications from outside Australia

You can apply for your student visa at the Australian embassy or Australian High Commission in your home country. In some countries, you can apply online through specific education agents.

> Details of your nearest Visa office or embassy

There are a number of specific requirements that need to be met before a student visa will be issued. These requirements include academic, English language competency and financial requirements. The exact requirements that will apply to you will depend on the highest level of study you enrol in (English, TAFE or university pathway program) and the Assessment Level of the country where you passport was issued.

You will need to show that you have access to sufficient funds to support yourself (and dependent family members named on the visa) whilst in Australia. This includes tuition costs and living expenses. As students only have a limited working allowance under the visa program, they must provide evidence in advance that they are able to adequately fund their stay in Australia.

All applicants for student visas must take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Unless you specify otherwise, TAFE NSW will arrange OSHC for you and will invoice you for the cost along with your tuition fees.

For more information about student visa requirements, visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) website. Registered education agents can also help you with your visa application.

Applications from within Australia

Some nationalities can apply for a student visa from within Australia. Also, if you wish to extend your student visa (for example, if you decide later to undertake further study) you will need to apply for a visa extension several weeks before your current visa expires.

For all matters regarding student visas in Australia, you should contact:
