About Our Courses
Studying at a TAFE NSW Institute is a great way to improve your English, learn practical workplace skills to prepare you for a job, or prepare for further studies at university.
Qualifications
TAFE NSW offers courses that lead to the award of a Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor and Graduate Certificate.
The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a national framework that identifies the qualifications that you can gain in schools, vocational education and training, and higher education.
AQF qualifications:
- are used throughout Australia
- have been developed with industry and the community
- help you move through and between different education levels and systems
- name and standardise the outcomes achieved in courses
Each AQF qualification is outcome-based, not based on the length of the course. For example, some Certificate 4 courses are quite short, but they have an entry requirement, or prerequisite, such as completion of a related Certificate 3 course.
All courses offered by TAFE NSW are AQF nationally recognised. A National Code number is listed on course information. This number shows that that course has national recognition.
Your offer letter states the qualification you will obtain when you complete all course requirements.
Mode of Study
Courses at TAFE NSW are taught using a mix of teaching modes. Most courses are delivered through face-to-face teaching. Teaching can also include:
- Simulated workplaces
- Job placement
- Supervised study
Nursing, Aged Care, Children's Services and Community Welfare courses may require you to undertake a Criminal Record Check (CRC), Occupational Assessment or Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Disease.
Please read the Workplace Learning Advice document for more information.
Assessment Methods
Courses are assessed in various ways.
For example, students must complete class work, assignments, practical components and project work throughout a course. They may then be assessed using a combination of continuous assessment and examinations.
Assessment outcomes may be:
- Competency-based
- Based on marks and grades
- Based-on a combination of competency-based assessment and mark or grade assessment
You receive more details about how your course is assessed after you enrol.
