Description

Developed to train you to gain employment in the community services industry in a range of positions, you will learn about interpersonal communication, basic counselling skills, group and team work skills, the social welfare and service delivery system, social justice and social disadvantage, advocacy, working across cultures, legal and ethical practice, case management, social policy and research, crisis intervention, conflict management, social welfare administration and how to work with people most at risk.

During the course students undertake 400 hours of work experience in social welfare agencies. Students may work with the elderly, unemployed, disabled, migrants, children at risk, youth, people with a mental illness, HIV AIDS and those with drug abuse issues.

TAFE Colleges offering the Diploma of Community Welfare Work (4459) apply for membership with the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers (AIWCW). For the approval status of various TAFE Colleges, see www.aiwcw.org.au. Graduates of this course are eligible for assessment by the AIWCW as welfare workers under the Skilled Migration scheme.

With effect from February 2011, new English language requirements apply for recognition of qualifications as a welfare worker for the purpose of migration to Australia. For details please see www.aiwcw.org.au

Entry Requirements

  • Year 12 or equivalent or Certificate 4 in Community Services Work (18061) or equivalent
  • CHEC, Newcastle and Port Macquarie campuses require Academic IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL (iBT) 51 or Certificate 3 in English for Further Study at TAFE NSW or equivalent
  • For any other campuses require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL (iBT) 68 or Certificate 3 in English for Further Study at TAFE NSW or equivalent
  • Academic IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL (iBT) 68 or Certificate 3 in English for Further Study at TAFE NSW or equivalent for Diploma-to-Degree courses (DIAC 573 visa requirement)

Graduates of the diploma can obtain one year of credit towards the Bachelor of Social Work degree at the University of Sydney. Please note that admission to this program is not guaranteed and that you must apply for admission to the University of Sydney and your application will be assessed on the basis of your academic record.
