Description
This course is for those working in the field of Electrical Engineering. This qualification provides enabling competencies to design and validate/evaluate electrical equipment and systems and provide technical advice/ sales.

Entry Requirements
- Year 12 or equivalent
- Academic IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL (iBT) 51 or Certificate 3 in English for Further Study at TAFE NSW or equivalent
- Academic IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL (iBT) 68 or Certificate 3 in English for Further Study at TAFE NSW or equivalent for Diploma-to-Degree courses (DIAC 573 visa requirement)

Course Structure
To achieve this qualification, the following must be successfully completed :
Group 1: All of the Core Competency Standard Units.
Group 2: At least three (3) of the Stream Core Competency Standard Units.
Group 3: Elective Units to a weighting of at least 50 points from the
included subgroups with weighting totals as indicated.
- Subgroup 1: Conditional on other subgroup totals
- Subgroup 2: Up to 18 points
- Subgroup 3: At least 33 points
Core Units
Group 1 CORE COMPETENCY STANDARD UNITS
All units must be completed
- Apply Occupational Health and Safety practices in the work place
- Dismantle, assemble and fabricate electrotechnology components
- Solve problems in extra-low voltage single path circuits
- Solve problems in multiple path d.c. circuits
- Fix and secure equipment
- Use drawings, diagrams, schedules and manuals
- Lay wiring/cabling and terminate accessories for extra-low voltage circuits
- Document occupational hazards and risks in electrical work
- Participate in development and follow a personal competency development plan
- Identify effects of energy on machinery and materials in an electrotechnology environment
- Undertake computations in an electrotechnology environment
- Solve problems in electromagnetic circuits
- Solve problems in single and three phase low voltage circuits
- Provide computational solutions to power engineering problems
- Solve problems in complex multiple path power circuits
- Solve problems in complex polyphase power circuits
Group 2 STREAM CORE COMPETENCY STANDARD UNITS
At least 3 units must be completed
- Manage workplace information systems
- Ensure Team Effectiveness
- Maintain documentation
- Source and purchase material/parts for installation or service jobs
- Provide quotations for installation or service jobs
- Deliver a service to customers
- Use basic computer applications relevant to a workplace
- Provide basic instruction in the use of electrotechnology apparatus

Group 3 ELECTIVE COMPETENCY STANDARD UNITS
All subgroups must be completed
Units to a total weight/points of at least 50 must be completed
Subgroup 1 SCHEDULE 3 ELECTIVE COMPETENCY STANDARD UNITS
All units must be completed
- Assemble, set up and test personal computers
- Use engineering applications software
- Lay and connect cables for multiple access to telecommunication services
- Carry out basic repairs to electronic apparatus by replacement of components
- Troubleshoot d.c. power supplies with single phase input
- Troubleshoot digital subsystems
- Troubleshoot amplifiers
- Troubleshoot frequency dependent circuits
- Find and repair faults in complex power supplies
- Troubleshoot basic amplifiers
Subgroup 2 SCHEDULE 4 ELECTIVE COMPETENCY STANDARD UNITS
Units to a maximum total weight/points of 18 may be completed
- Develop, enter and verify programs for programmable logic controllers using ladder instruction set
- Select and arrange equipment for general electrical installations
- Diagnose and rectify faults in digital subsystems of electronic controls
- Install and set up transducers and sensing devices
- Solve problems in pressure measurement systems
- Solve problems in density/level measurement systems
- Solve problems in flow measurement systems
- Solve problems in temperature measurement systems
- Solve problems in process controllers, transmitters and converters
Subgroup 3 SCHEDULE 5/6 ELECTIVE COMPETENCY STANDARD UNITS
Units to a total weight/points of at least 33 must be completed
- Develop, enter and verify programs in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems
- Manage risk in electrotechnology activities
- Provide computational solutions to basic engineering problems
- Manage electrical projects
- Plan electrical projects
- Provide solutions to single phase electronic power control problems
- Develop strategies to address sustainability issues
