Entry Requirements


Check the academic and English language entry requirements to ensure that you are eligible to apply for your chosen course.

Please note that from 2009, TAFE NSW will only accept academic IELTS test scores. For more information on the IELTS test, please go to: http://www.ielts.org

English language requirements*
Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses** D2D Diploma-to-Degree
university pathway programs
  • IELTS score 5.5 with no individual band lower than 5 or
  • TOEFL 530 (PBT) or 197 (CBT) or 71 (iBT) or
  • STEP / EIKEN Grade Pre 1 or
  • TAFE NSW Certificate 3 in English for Further Studies or
  • Evidence that the medium of instruction at your senior school has been in English with satisfactory grades in English in final examinations

* Depending on your nationality, an IELTS result may be the only acceptable proof of English competency that the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship will accept for student visa purposes. Check www.immi.gov.au for details.

** Some courses including Aviation, Design and Fine Arts require:

  • IELTS 6.0 or
  • TOEFL 570 (PBT) or 230 (CBT) or 88 (iBT) or
  • TAFE NSW Certificate in English for Further Studies

The Diploma of Interpreting requires:

  • IELTS 6.5 or
  • TOEFL 577 (PBT) or 233 (CBT) or 90 (iBT)

  • Most courses require Australian Year 10 or equivalent, although some require Australian Year 12 or equivalent

  • Check the 'Entry Requirements' section of the individual course information page to confirm specific requirements.
  • Australian Year 12 or equivalent

^ Entry to some courses requires a prerequisite (e.g. completion of a prior course). Check the details listed under "Entry Requirements" on the course information pages for specific requirements.

If you do not have a Year 12 equivalent qualification but have other post-school qualifications, your application can still be considered
