Media reports in Australia and overseas regarding the safety of international students and the quality of education and training in Australia are disturbing for students, parents and the community. Most of these reports are linked to private providers.

TAFE NSW is proud of its reputation for the provision of quality educational progress and support services to international students.

For more than 100 years, TAFE NSW has been a leading public provider of vocational training in Australia. With over 400,000 local and international students enrolled at 120 college locations, TAFE NSW is the largest education provider in Australia.

TAFE NSW Institutes are government owned and operated by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training (DET) and are continuously seeking to improve the quality of the services they provide.

One high priority strategy adopted by TAFE NSW is the establishment in January 2009 of the NSW Ministerial Taskforce on International Education. Minister Firth invited me to Chair this taskforce which is examining all aspects of the international student experience. Its report which outlines key issues identified as well as strategies to address them will be presented to the NSW Minister for Education and Training in the near future.

You can be confident that TAFE NSW colleges offer high quality courses, respected qualifications within the Australian Qualifications Framework, modern facilities and teachers with industry experience and valid teaching qualifications.

Our courses are:

  • developed in consultation with national Industry Skills Councils
  • certified by the Australian government
  • developed to meet rigorous teaching and assessment standards and
  • revised regularly to keep pace with the latest developments in industry, commerce and the global employment market.

In small classes, international students learn in a highly interactive way with close supervision.

Face-to-face practical work takes place in specialist rooms on campus:

  • Computer resource centres
  • Commercial-scale kitchens and restaurants
  • Design and multimedia centres
  • Engineering workshops
  • Science laboratories
  • Hairdressing salons
  • Maritime and aviation simulators.

International Student Coordinators at TAFE colleges carefully follow the academic progress of each student and take their welfare seriously. They provide learning support in the form of study skills, tutorial support, and career advice throughout the course and staff assist students to locate resources in well-equipped, modern libraries for students’ use.

TAFE NSW job placement services help enrolled students get part-time work with reputable employers.

Credit transfer articulation and Diploma-to-Degree programs provide international students with pathways to a large number of leading Australian universities.

You can be assured TAFE NSW provides excellent tuition and student services to international students at all our colleges. Our primary focus is education and training, and our aim is for all our students, including international students, to achieve their best.
