Yasir Al-Khateeb - Iraq
Advanced Diploma of Telecommunications Engineering
2007 Endeavour Vocational Education and Training Award
Yasir Al-Khateeb is a young Iraqi with a dream to do his part to reconstruct his country and reconnect his fellow citizens with the outside world.
A lack of experience and infrastructure in the telecommunications field in Iraq is a major problem facing the country’s challenge to rebuild.
To develop his knowledge and skills, Yasir applied for an Endeavour Vocational Education and Training Award to undertake an Advanced Diploma of Telecommunications Engineering at TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute, Lidcombe College.
Yasir completed his qualification in June 2009 and is confident that his Australian qualifications will assist him to get a good job in Iraq.
Yasir’s experience in Australia has helped him build lifelong relationships and has contributed immensely to his personal development.

Yasir’s Australian education experience
Yasir thoroughly enjoyed the lifestyle he experienced while he studied in Sydney.
“The public transport network is excellent making it easy for students to get around. The library is a fantastic resource and having access to Muslim prayer rooms was great for me.
I regularly used the gym for boxing and yoga classes.”
Yasir enjoyed spending time with his classmates and found inspiration interacting with students from such diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Plans for the future
Yasir plans to pursue a career in telecommunications which will play an important role in supporting the Iraqi economy and creating employment opportunities for the Iraqi people.
The Endeavour Awards are the Australian Government’s internationally competitive, merit-based program which provides opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to do similar programs abroad.
