What is TAFE NSW?
TAFE stands for "Technical And Further Education". In Australia, when students finish high school they have the option of attending University or TAFE if they wish to continue studying. TAFE NSW is the largest vocational education and training provider in Australia and one of the best in the world. All TAFE NSW Institutes are government-owned, operated and accredited. TAFE NSW Institutes are located across the state of New South Wales in Eastern Australia. Sydney is the capital city of New South Wales
What is the best thing about studying at TAFE NSW?
TAFE NSW offers a great qualification and practical on the job experience. There are great facilities on campus and the teachers and staff provide great support. With TAFE NSW you can get a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma, and have opportunities to continue to university.
How is TAFE NSW different to a University?
TAFE NSW provides many programs that allow you to continue your studies at university. Many of the subject areas offered by TAFE NSW are very practical and not offered at universities. TAFE NSW class sizes are smaller and much more practical than those at university. TAFE NSW teaches subject areas as commercial cookery, fashion design and children studies. Universities teach more theory based subjects such as Law, Medicine and Science.
Can I work in Australia?
As a student visa holder, you are entitled to work up to 20 hours a week while your are studying. During holiday periods, you are entitled to work full-time (approximately 40 hours per week).
Will TAFE NSW help me find a part-time job?
Many students find part-time employment in the retail and hospitality industries. Some TAFE NSW colleges provide job placement services. Many students complete work placement as part of their course which leads to paid part-time employment in their field. Staff at the International Students Unit can provide suggestions on where to look for work. TAFE NSW provides students with practical skills which they can use to find part-time jobs.
What will my timetable be like?
This will vary from program to program, but you will be expected to study at least 20 hours per week. Some of you will have lectures but many of you will be working on practical assignments and projects.
How many other students will be in my class?
TAFE NSW classes are small with an average ratio of 1 teacher to 15 students.
Where do students live?
Many students choose to live around the TAFE NSW campus where they will be studying. On-campus housing is not available at TAFE NSW Institutes but International Students Unit staff can assist in locating accommodation. Many students choose to live with other students. Living away from the city centre can also reduce the costs of accommodation.
Can I practice my own religion?
In Australia, people are free to practice and follow their own beliefs and religion. You will find many churches, temples, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship all across Sydney. Places of worship can be found in the White Pages, listed alphabetically under the denomination.
Is Sydney a safe place to live?
Sydney is a large metropolitan city with a population of over four million. Compared to other cities, Sydney is very safe and you can move around freely in most areas without any fear. However, like all large cities, there is some crime. You should be careful and sensible to protect yourself and your valuables. Information on safety will be provided to you at orientation.
