Temporary Residents Program

Senior students in uniform

The Temporary Residents Program provides visitor visa holders, dependents of international students, bridging visa holders and other temporary resident visa holders with the opportunity to study in a NSW government school. Eligible students can enrol from Kindergarten to Year 12.

The visitor visa program is for visitors to Australia who want their children to study at a NSW government school while they are in Australia.

These children are on visitor visas to Australia. Children must be accompanied by their parents or staying with direct relatives – grandparents; aunts, uncles or older brothers and sisters who are resident in Australia.

The Temporary Resident Visa program is:

  • not for groups of students who will attend New South Wales schools on an advertised tour,
  • not for students who enrol in NSW government schools on an international student visa.

Groups of students who want to attend a NSW government school must apply through either the Study Tour program or the international student visa program.

Agents advertising or organising a program for students to enrol in a NSW government school must be registered with DET International as either a Study Tour agent or an Education Agent.

For details of specific visa subcategories that can support an application for enrolment, refer to the Schedule of Visa Subclasses and Conditions.

Students holding eligible visas enrol through the Temporary Residents Unit of DET International.

Note: Student visa (subclass 571P) holders must enrol through the International Students Program.

Further information about the program is available via a range of specific fact sheets available for download here.
