Student Study Tours

Our teachers and students like to welcome overseas visitors to the safe and friendly environment of our schools and with our host families.

Study tours provide student groups with access to a wide range of exciting learning experiences and opportunities for enjoyable cultural and social interaction.

Sydney and New South Wales offer a mild climate and some of the most exciting attractions in Australia.

We customise each study tour so your group has a well-balanced program of educational activities and fun sightseeing experiences.

Group size

Minimum group size is 15 students.

Large groups may be hosted by two or more schools.

For programs which are longer than four weeks duration, the minimum group size is negotiable.

Age

Students must be 10 years of age or older at the time of the study tour.

Duration

Tours are available from half-day to ten weeks in duration

Study tours can be arranged any time during school term.

We encourage you to consider visiting a school in regional NSW. Regional townships are welcoming and offer unique attractions such as coastal beaches, rainforests, national parks or a true outback location.

Price

DET International will design a program to suit your requirements. Costs are based on the number of participants, the duration of the program, the location of the host school and the components requested.

Program components

All programs include a welcome ceremony, assembly, morning tea with student buddies, school tour, catered farewell party and a participation certificate for each student.

Programs can also include optional English lessons, classroom learning, sporting activities, excursions and homestay accommodation. Further activities or services may be included upon request.

  • English lessons
    Conversational English lessons can be arranged for your group. Trained teachers tailor lessons to the participants' age level and proficiency. Classes are designed to be fun and interactive with practical experiences to match classroom work.
  • Classroom learning and sporting activities
    Students have the opportunity to participate alongside local students in regular school classes. Subjects offered include sport, health, science, music, drama, art, social sciences, cooking, woodwork and environmental studies.

    Visiting students are paired with a "buddy" – an Australian student of similar age – to encourage friendships and to assist students settle into their new environment

    All NSW government high schools teach a language other than English. Classes in popular languages such as Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Indonesian, French, German or Italian provide further opportunities for cultural exchange.

  • Excursions and sightseeing

    Schools can arrange excursions to a range of local places of interest or to NSW's most famous locations and tourist attractions. See native Australian animals, join in bush walks, bush dances or boomerang throwing and eat typical Australian foods at a BBQ (barbeque). Visiting students enjoy an active and safe learning experience supervised by school staff.

    It is also possible to visit an Environmental Education Centre to learn about the environment in a unique setting.

    Some common excursion venues in Sydney include:
  • Homestay accommodation
    Optional homestay accommodation can be arranged for each of your group members upon request. Homestay provides students with the opportunity to experience daily life in an Australian household and to practise speaking English in an informal setting.

    Families are carefully selected from the local school community to provide a safe and friendly environment. Host families provide three meals per day and transport to and from the host school. Accommodation is provided on either a single or double placement basis.
