Intensive English
Students who need to improve their English skills can undertake an intensive English language course before they start at a NSW government high school.
Intensive English programs in schools
Students can study an intensive English course for up to 20 weeks at a NSW government Intensive English Centre (IEC) before moving into a transition program to ensure successful integration into studies at their nominated high school:
- The course is designed to introduce students to the Australian school system and provides intensive English language tuition, orientation and welfare support
- Students learn English for key high school and core Year 11 subjects
- Teachers are university-trained and are qualified English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors
- Students study with their age group in small classes (maximum 18 students)
- Classes run for each full school day
- Students have access to computers, video and library facilities and modern language libraries
- Students can join the intensive English program any week during academic term up to the start of Term 4
- Students may enrol from 12 years of age.
Programs are available at Cleveland Street Intensive English High School and at a number of Intensive English Centres (IECs) based in NSW government high schools throughout Sydney and Wollongong. Students are placed at the IEC for their high school district. IEC vacancies may vary according to area.
