Successful launch of school leadership program

DET International is working with the DET Professional Learning and Leadership Development Directorate (PLLDD) to assist the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) in the United Arab Emirates with research into the professional development needs of their school leaders.
For stage one of the project, an interim Project Director was appointed to work in Abu Dhabi as DET International’s representative. In November 2008, nine former DET school principals travelled to Abu Dhabi to interview over 300 school principals in three zones within the Emirate.
The objective of the interviews was to assess the professional development needs of each school principal against the ADEC-developed standards for school leadership.
In January, the principals sat a two-hour test which focused on the decisions they must make on a daily basis. Feedback from the interview, the test, and a survey of their previous academic studies and professional development are now being analysed to produce a comprehensive profile of each principal and their future professional development priorities.
This first phase of the project was very well received by the principals and ADEC management.
“The principals have been very positive about this project and value the importance being placed on their own professional development,” said Interim Project Director, Peter Holden. “ADEC’s excellent guidance and support has been instrumental in conducting the interviews and developing the profiles.”
