2008 – a successful year

Significant growth across all product lines was achieved in 2008 with revenue exceeding $100 million. Streamlining and improvement of business practices, a reduction in processing times, an increase in application to conversion rates, and greater attention to client and stakeholder requirements contributed to DET International’s success.

  • International student enrolments in TAFE NSW Institutes increased by 32%.
  • NSW government schools, with 27% increase in international student enrolments in 2008, is the largest Australian school provider.
  • Study Tours grew by 34% in 2008 with 206 groups (8,300 students and teachers) visiting NSW metropolitan and regional government schools.
  • The Temporary Visa Holder Program (Schools) increased by 19%.
  • International projects included the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, World Expo 2010 Shanghai, the Vocational Education and Training Institute (VETI) Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Education Council Schools Leadership Program, and 45 TAFE NSW Institute-led projects in North and South-east Asia, India, Bangladesh, Middle East, Oceania, Colombia, Denmark and South Africa.
  • DET International hosted 50 delegations (769 guests) from Bangladesh, Brunei, Canada, Ethiopia, Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, People’s Republic of China, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, USA and Vietnam.
  • Agent familiarisation visits continued as an important component of DET International’s marketing activities with its worldwide agent network. The final group of the year were welcomed to Sydney in November and included eight offshore agent representatives from China, India, Thailand and Vietnam.
  • Online direct marketing campaign activity increased, an agents portal was activated on the DET International website, and an online international student application process for TAFE NSW and schools was developed and will be launched in early 2009.
  • Improved online services for DET International’s travel plan and a contract database for project management were introduced.
  • DET International collaborated with WorldSkills 2008 and World Youth Day 08 event organisers and is a stakeholder in Tourism NSW’s Brand Sydney project to build Sydney’s reputation as a hub for business, education, culture, tourism and world-class events.
  • DET International will lead a NSW ministerial taskforce on international education in 2009 to focus on marketing and recruitment, welfare, safety and quality.
