South Pacific
DEC International has delivered capacity building projects and provided experts to the Asian Development Bank for educational evaluation projects in the South Pacific.
South Pacific In-Country Training (Tuvalu, Tonga and Kiribati): 2001–2006
NSW trainers undertook training missions to Tuvalu, Tonga and Kiribati and delivered technical and other courses, including capacity building courses for local training institutions and individuals.
The training covered:
- Employment sectors such as construction and engineering (roads and bridges)
- Business and commerce
- Agriculture
- Law and order
- Community services
- Education
- Health
We trained more than 4,000 participants from various sectors of society, including:
- Rural areas
- Small business people conducting business with government agencies
- Government officers who manage contracts
Skills Development in the Pacific (Asian development Bank) 2006-2007
DEC International provided a multi-national project team with an expert consultant to assess the economic relevance of the VET systems in six of 13 islands in the South Pacific.
The assessment addressed:
- Cost and effectiveness
- Economic trends and their implications for the labour and training market
Over a period of ten months, the consultant:
- Evaluated educational policies
- Recommended adaptations
- Analysed the sources and uses of financing in the VET sector
- Determined unit costs and their composition, particularly teacher salary structures
- Identified the implications of labour market trends
- Analysed the regulatory framework for the provision of VET
