DEC International in conjunction with AusAID carried out a capacity building project in Aceh, Indonesia making an important contribution to education reform.
Revitalisation of the School Cluster System in Pidie District
This DEC International revitalisation project focused on 32 target schools in the Pidie district, grouped into four primary school clusters. Over a period of eight months, the project:
- Built capacity for 900 teachers, principals and local authorities
- Enhanced school-based management and community participation
- Introduced innovative organisational structures and new teaching methods
- Upgraded damaged infrastructure
- Improved school performance
A team of DEC and national education advisers worked with local authorities and communities to:
- Increase staff self-initiative
- Foster community support for schools
- Change classroom management practices
- Introduce transparent school management procedures
By monitoring and following cross-cutting issues like gender, cultural awareness, the project achieved exceptionally high community ownership, while targeted communication contributed to mainstreaming ideas and practices.
